What We Do

Our Approach

The Stevens Initiative will fuel the largest ever increase in people-to-people exchanges between the United States and the broader Middle East, creating a global classroom that vastly increases the number and diversity of youth who have a meaningful cross-cultural experience as part of their education. By using advances in media technologies, global connectivity, and student engagement, the Initiative will bring to scale the transformative nature of the cross-cultural exchange experience making what was once rare commonplace and deliver a more robust learning experience to youth in the US, the Middle East and North Africa.

The approach of the global classroom is based on three key tenets:

fostering

Enhancing

Mutual Understanding and Respect

New technologies are connecting global populations — particularly youth — as never before, but these connections in the unmediated space of the Internet can fuel misunderstanding and division. Through intensive, structured online engagements between youth at secondary through post-secondary education levels, the Initiative aims to increase mutual understanding and equip a generation of globally minded youth with the skills and aptitudes they need to succeed in the 21st century. The Stevens Initiative will combine best practices in cross-cultural education and interactive technology to enable deep, meaningful educational interactions between young people.

Teaching

21st Century Skills

Designed in part to address the global education-to-employment gap, the Stevens Initiative will support programming that provides young people with the 21st century skills that employers around the world are seeking digital literacy, leadership, cross-cultural communication, and collaborative problem-solving. Tapping into the power of new technologies, virtual exchange offers all youth the opportunity for learning anytime, anywhere through a new approach to education called Connected Learning.

Increasing

Global Connectivity

Increased connectivity through technology is driving young people to seek connections with peers outside of their local communities and encouraging them to tackle local and global challenges. The Stevens Initiative will foster digital literacy while simultaneously connecting young people in sustained and meaningful ways that lay the foundation for a safer and more prosperous world.
