AMPEI’s Program for the Internationalization of the Curricula for the Americas (PIC-AMERICAS) builds an ecosystem of COIL programs at higher education institutions in the Americas, supporting educators in internationalizing their curricula and empowering thousands of young people with a global education experience. Faculty work together to design a COIL course that meets the unique needs and interests of their students, engaging in capacity building opportunities provided by AMPEI leading up to and during program implementation. PIC-AMERICAS helps prepare young people in the Americas for the global workforce by enabling them to tackle complex global, political, economic, and social challenges facing the world today.
Activities
This program includes both capacity building of educators and the implementation of COIL courses, a model of virtual exchange that brings students and professors together across cultures to learn, discuss, and collaborate as part of ongoing regular courses. The capacity building component includes:
- Networking support to identify potential teaching partners
- COIL design faculty workshops
- Mentoring to accompany faculty during their COIL implementation
- Training for COIL coordinators to strengthen institutional capacities to consolidate the program.
Paired professors will design unique COIL programs to complement existing curriculum in classes they teach. The activities students participants engage in differ, but common competencies cultivated include:
- Collaboration
- Digital literacy
- Foreign language proficiency
- Awareness and respect of multicultural perspectives
- Social responsibility
- Tolerance, empathy, and global engagement
