Teens of Color Abroad’s TOCA Online provides meaningful language practice and promotes understanding across cultures among language students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States and university students in the Middle East and North Africa. Participants engage in real-life conversations on a range of topics including understanding social identity, studying language and culture, intercultural communication skills in a globalized world, global citizenship, and more. Through intentional community building, students enhance their global awareness and social-emotional intelligence, which will prepare them to live and work in a diverse world.

Activities

Young people from the U.S. and MENA engage in a structured series of one-on-one language exchanges in Arabic and English, cultural exchange workshops, and interactive online modules that enrich their educational experiences. After collaborating synchronously and asynchronously over seven to eight weeks, American participants submit short self-introduction videos in Arabic, demonstrating their new language skills. Participants from MENA submit presentations that describe their experience collaborating with U.S. students to prepare them for the workforce.
